There are rumours circling in the media that Sourav Ganguly is in the race of becoming the coach of the Indian Cricket Team.
Ganguly had earlier expressed his desire to coach the national side after his retirement, but, the previous regime of the Board for Control of Cricket in India was more interested in the services of the foreign coaches.
However, the new regime which is being headed by Jagmohan Dalmiya, one of the well wishers of Ganguly, is quite open to the idea of appointing Indian coaches.
Ganguly is not the only contender though as far as this race is concerned. Ravi Shastri’s name is there as well.
It is believed some of the current Indian players quite liked the way Shastri kept them motivated during the World Cup and they want him to be given a full time role.
The opinion of the two captains will also play a key role in this matter.
MS Dhoni, the captain of the One day International and the T20 side, while, Virat Kohli, the captain of the test side, will have their say.
If there had been any other person at the president’s post in the BCCI at the moment, Shastri’s case would have been much stronger than that of Ganguly, but, just because it’s Dalmiya at the helm, the Bengal Tiger has the better chance.
Ganguly can actually prove to be a good coach for the Indian team with his astuteness and all, but, the problem is that he is also a very hot tempered guy much like Virat Kohli and that might lead to a personality clash in the long term.
Kohli would take over as captain in all the formats once Dhoni retires from the game and that would probably happen very, very soon.
